It's Not How You Feel...

This, from a Billy Crystal song from the glorious 1980's:

Saludos, my darlings
And you know who you are
Come on, let's mingle
So nice to see you

Throw your hips into the air
Like Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire
Let's crazy go nuts

Just looking into your eyes, darling
I can tell that you have
The legs of a dancer

So bring those legs and the
Rest of your body over here
And be Fernando's private prancer

Darling, I got to tell you something
And I don't say this to everybody
You look marvelous
Absolutely marvelous

You know, my dear
My father used to say to me
Nando, don't be a schnook
It's not how you feel,
It's How. You. Look!

He was marvelous but you, darling
You look marvelous
Absolutely marvelous

And this is from my heart
Which is deep inside my body
It is better to look good
Than to feel good

Today was Alan's work party, and Alan was working today, so he couldn't go.  Usually we get kids who complain about having to go and make awkward conversation with their dad's colleagues, but this year they really wanted to show up.  There is always excellent food, and the entertainment is a men's acapella group (The Y Chromotones) led by Mariah and Eliza's choir director and this year full of boys they know from school.  They are REALLY good.  And I usually just sit and smile as I listen to them because they are such cute boys singing so well.  The other reason the girls wanted to go is that I usually buy them new clothes for this event that count as Christmas clothes, but they get to wear them early.

So this morning, we were going to do it all.  I was fairly desperate to have a clean house before we left because it had just been so long since I've had one.  It seems like everyone who helps me would like to help me take care of the babies, which is physically pretty easy for ME to do, and let me take care of the rest of the things like laundry and making sure people eat and cleaning, which pretty much wipes me out in a hurry.  So I assigned the kids house jobs, but forgot to tell them how very important it was for them to do them well and without help.  I had to keep nagging them to come back and do things right and to do things that I had forgotten to tell them each individual step.  And I kept helping them.  We had planned to leave by 11:00 or 11:30, but at 11:00am I was in tears and still without a shower.  Just then, Alan called and I couldn't even talk I was so weepy.   It was terrible.  Talking to him helped me though, and I explained to the kids that without a clean house and much better help without complaining, we wouldn't be going.  And that it was iffy for me to even make it at all, since I could barely move to get myself ready at that point.  Things got very quiet and very efficient in a hurry.

So we made it.  The Y Chromotones were wonderful.  The food was great.  And we at least LOOKED marvelous.

  1. Marvelous indeed! You look sexy and skinny and sassy. The clothes are all stunning. The grins are cheesy. Eve doesn't seem impressed, but she and her brother look smashing. (But it breaks my heart that you were in tears. Oh, how I wish to clean and do your laundry!!!!)

  2. Yowzah! You're the miracle mom. Getting that good looking in less than a MONTH? I would be soooo jealous, only I like you too much. Here's why photos are important -- when you look great, nobody knows if you feel rotten, right? I'm with Mom. I would love to come over and clean.

  3. "Hugs" significant other: I agree with Billy Crystal. You look wonderfully beautiful. We'd never guess based on it. I too want to look good when I'm not.
