Keeping it real

So, just in case anyone thought I was an awesome mom on the day I made the honey taffy, I keep feeling that I should share what else went on that day, just because it is an illustration of how motherhood is such a great way to keep learning to be humble.

-I took that sick girl of mine shopping, which is totally not what you are supposed to do with sick kids. But she was home, and I had her to myself and she really did need a few things. I got in trouble from her older sisters who claim that I make them sleep or do homework when they are home from school. And even though she was happy we got her some stuff, it set her recovery back in a big way. Bad move, Mom.
-I completely forgot that I was supposed to help in Wyatt's class that day. Didn't show up at all. I got in trouble from Wyatt, who was also devastated that I made him WALK home from school with me on a day he had basketball practice.
-I also completely forgot that I was supposed to pick up one of Willa's friends from the choir practice she didn't go to, and when I got there 20 minutes late and called her mom to see if someone else had taken her home, I heard her walk in crying because she had walked home and run into scary dogs on the way.
-Just in case I felt okay about myself at that point, Mariah watched the video I made and was horrified that I had made it and posted it on my blog. Apparently, that is the dorkiest thing ever.
-I got after her for not honoring her mother.

I was so glad when that day ended and I got to get in bed with one of the few people in my house who thought I was okay.

  1. Ah, motherhood. The moments of heaven on earth that turn around and smack you in the behind.
You are still wonderful and I hope the next days went and are going better.

  2. You are adorable Heather! I think you are more than okay … I think you ARE a FABULOUS mother. I am at a new realization that my years of unconditional adoration by my young children is becoming a thing of the past with my three older ones. It’s been a really humbling realization for me and a bit overwhelming as I am trying to see myself and my weaknesses as they see me … and all this has really just happened in the last 5 days. Ugh … like you said, motherhood is such a journey of self-improvement, humility and persistence, isn’t it?

If it makes you feel any better, I have forgot that many things for that many different children in one day many times!

  3. Kayci said it so well. (And have you been to Glen's blog lately? He posted this great video of an experiment we tried at home. Maybe I'll even blog about it!)

  4. You have such a fun sense of humor and a good heart. Isn't motherhood the BEST?! Even on the days you are more human than ever...and your kids point it out.

  5. oh. I relate. How I do relate. The fact that you sleep with someone who approves of you really makes up for it all.

  6. Heather, when I read this my first thought was "Angi will be sooooo glad to find someone else forgets." Every time she forgets some thing she is sure she forgets MORE THAN I DO....and I have almost 40 years headstart on her!! When I was talking with her yesterday and shared my chuckles at your eventful day...she lalughed and said she had sent you a response saying the same thing. xo
