No Tears

Mariah and Eliza tried out for freshman cheerleader on Friday. They worked really hard on it--for about a week and a half. It was really fun to see them finally excited about something (anything!) after their apathetic slog through middle school. They practiced their jumps, cheers and chants together for DAYS (about ten of them) and are STILL doing them even though try-outs are over and even though they didn't make it onto the team in the end. They were disappointed to find that all those muscles they had from gymnastics two years ago were somehow missing and they weren't quite as sharp on their jumps or their tumbling as they would have been if they were still doing all that tough conditioning. But overall, the disappointment was surprisingly mild. Mariah has already moved on to her plan B--cross country running. Eliza is somewhat concerned that she didn't really have a backup plan, but maybe Mariah will talk her into running too. And thankfully, there is no try out for that.

As for me, I hope it's not too bad that I didn't cry either. I think I'd rather have runners than cheerleaders living at my house.

  1. You are right. We are not cheerleader moms. And, I read Magic of Ordinary Days last week, just because you said to. I loved it.

  2. In our family, we have cheerleaders and runners! I wonder what's in store for Cora. She is a groover, but boy can she run! It's nice they didn't care too much about making the team!

  3. Remember the FABULOUS cheer tryouts of our middle-school days? Ahhh, the sharpness of it all. Are you still proud to be a Bear? "We are the bears and we are proud. Stand up all you bears and shout -- out -- loud!" That's poetry for ya.

Ok. I'm just thrilled you read Janette's book. The bikini scene featured big guffaws from the corner of my room where I read, and quizzical calls from all over the house of "Are you ok?" Azya's happy too.

So, speaking of Azya: you haven't invited her to view your blog. Can you? I'll e-mail her e-mail address because for some reason it seems BAD to put it out here in the open where everybody can see it. There's cyber-paranoia for you.

I love to be your sister. You are tremendously fun and completely good at everything you do. Love, POL

  4. Amen to that - although have gymnasts and runners in the family can be a bit confusing too. Maren really loved track - her favorite is hurdles and long jump. We'd love to see Eliza and Mariah join her! Yes, we do need to get together. We will be in Utah just before the fourth. Or you can always make a trip out to MEDFORD!?!
