We went to a great fireside tonight that was put on to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization of the Kansas City Missouri stake. I was surprised that it was only 50 years, until I was reminded that it was legal to shoot Mormons in Missouri until 1976. The first sacrament meeting was held in this area in 1831, but the saints had to leave because of the extermination order which was issued in 1838. The first missionaries were called back to Missouri in 1855, but it took until 1956, one hundred and twenty five years after the first saints arrived in Jackson county to establish a stake here. The program tonight included talks by several of the stake presidents of the 7 stakes that have been formed in the metro area from that original stake. (There are actually 11 stakes that cover the 1400 square miles of the original stake.) We also had amazing music. A costumed, professional-sounding choir sang Mo-tab renditions of Redeemer of Israel, Joseph Smith's First Prayer, Come Come Ye Saints, The Spirit of God and an amazing original anthem composed just for this occasion.
We are amazed and excited to be in this place and to help build the kingdom of God where we now live. What a blessing the restored gospel is in our lives!
